Responsibilities
Provide strong architecture leadership, analysis and design considerations related to researching and piloting emerging technologies with a strong focus on midrange strategies. Negotiate and deal with ambiguity in resolving conflicts between standards and exceptions. Work with Business Partners to analyze technology needs and present solutions that are consistent with long-range strategic plans and technical standards. Provide focus for various IT strategies while collaborating with technology partners and strategic external vendors at all senior levels. Provide timely research and analysis of technology products, and influence \strategic directions aligned to business needs. Provide consulting expertise to the assigned application portfolios, leveraging business and technical knowledge to support business strategies and deliver business value.
Required Qualifications
Bachelor of Science Degree in Computer Science or a related discipline preferred (or equivalent combination of education and work experience) and at least five (5), typically fifteen (15) years of solid, diverse work experience supporting distributed applications residing on Sun Microsystems platforms including strong Computer Systems Management skills. Must have strong strategic and thought leadership skills. Possess an industry wide knowledge and demonstrable expertise and knowledge in integration of midrange solutions and strategies. Must have strong judgment and organizational skills, and the ability to work effectively with Business and Technologies Leaders and staff at all levels. Strong business acumen and the ability to identify key issues and their impact in a broad business context. Strong presentations/verbal communications skills and the ability to train and mentor other engineers. Proven application of consultative skills and proven ability to drive results for large-scale integration. Proven ability to deliver solutions with emphasis on reducing cycle time and increasing speed to market of new products. Excellent interpersonal skills, including strong decision-making and negotiation skills. Ability to juggle and prioritize multiple activities, workloads, and objectives. Demonstrated ability to lead team efforts, including delegation of and follow-up on tasks. Strong leadership, decision-making skills, and ability to assume significant leadership responsibility without direct authority. A strong knowledge of Solaris 10, Perl, LDAP, Veritas Volume Manager, Veritas File System, and SAN configured storage is required. A sound knowledge of EMC hardware, to include Clariion, Symmetrix, and Clariion Disk Library is required. A sound knowledge of EMC software products to include PowerPath, Solutions Enabler, and EMC Networker is required. Knowledge of Live Upgrade, Sun MC, Sun Update Connection, and E25K hardware architecture is a plus. Knowledge of IDN development and productions environments supported by Sybase IQ/ASE is advantageous.
Provides technical expertise in the design, implementation, and maintenance of database management systems that support institutional business applications. Ensures logical data models are mapped effectively and efficiently into physical data models that take advantage of the characteristics of the specific DBMS used. Supervises and/or leads a database administration team which is responsible for technically supporting multiple databases that run university-wide business applications. Typical DBMSs used are Oracle (relational), which is supported on Netware and AIX, and IDMS (network and relational), which is supported on MVS. This position requires significant Sybase DBA skills as well as Solaris system administration and Unix script writing. Familiarity working with financial/statistical modeling processes would be helpful. Responsibilities will also include training and supporting Junior DBA's.
